A Chosen Family

With all the focus on traditional Mothers’ and Fathers’ Days, we thought chosen families also deserve a little attention – after all, you don’t need to be biologically related to have people support you, look out for you, and love you unconditionally. We can learn a lot from the Dashi Diner crew – who know how to celebrate unconventional kinship.

Family Time At Dashi Diner

Founded by Vietnamese-born, German-raised women Phuong Thao Westphal and Thuy Pham, Dashi Diner is the result of their cross-cultural insights and culinary expertise. Crucially, Dashi has also become a place of social connection in the two months since its opening. It’s a space where people are welcome and safe. Where they feel like they belong.

Family Time

A chosen family can be a group of friends, colleagues, and even strangers when you share common beliefs or common, universal experiences.

The world is moving and the definition of family has changed. And we should all be open to it. Just surround yourself with people that you feel connected to.

Located at Invalidenstrasse 112 in a bustling corner of Berlin’s Mitte district, the Dashi group shares work, laughs, and food in a warm bubble of inclusivity. Building a family from the people you choose to surround yourself with is a very special thing. Forged in trust and communal interests, these are relationships that can last a lifetime.

Sharing the Love

In addition to cooking and eating together with their friends and family, one of Thao and Thuy’s mutual love languages is that of gift giving. Through that timeless gesture of gratitude and affection, it’s how they like to show they care.
